If you can only go to one place when passing through Exeter, you should try and get to the Rabbit Cafe. It was the first recommendation I received when I moved here, as well as the very first place I google-mapped (before subsequently getting lost).
The Rabbit Cafe is a completely independent cafe which caters to a hand-made and entirely vegan menu. Coincidentally, they also own the vegan-only store next door called Seasons which is definitely worth a visit, if only to support local businesses. Situated over the recently uncovered remains of the St. Sidwells ancient well, the interior is decorated adorably with plants and a mural of rabbits and butterflies.
Their set menu is split between virtue...
And vice...
In addition to their standard menu, however, the Rabbit Cafe also has a revolving specials board of specialised dished and extravagant cakes. Their Instagram account is a dieter's worst nightmare for reason.
One of the Rabbit Cafe's major selling points is their complete tolerance on dogs - the cuter the better - their focus on maintaining a completely organic, vegan-friendly menu. There are specialised gluten-free items and they do a number of ticketed evening events for the more grandiose of dishes.
The Rabbit Cafe is, for me, the perfect place to study or do a spot of writing over an indulgent cruelty-free torte and away from the hustle of the high street. You can keep up with their events on their Facebook page, or drool over their many cakes on their Instagram (of which I am a very frequent visitor!).
