Hold the presses, 'metropolitan' cuisine has hit the hidden corners of rural Somerset.
Daniels Sushi is the latest attempt to move the quint town-scape away from the ubiquitous chain-restaurants and fast food. Every so often someone comes along, takes advantage of the cheaper real estate and tries to extend the locals palette.
The owner, Daniel Chirita has always wanted to open a sushi restaurant, after working as a chef in a Michelin starred restaurant for seven years. Although I wouldn't say sushi naturally fits into the agriculture, however if anyone could change that, I think Daniels Sushi could do it.
It has the wonderful, unfortunately rare mix of provide authentic, delicious cuisine on a budget. My family and I went to Daniels Sushi on my last day before moving up to London and I wanted to go somewhere that we all could eat. My sister is severely allergic to just about everything, so balancing that with somewhere that does vegan food can pose a few problems.
Daniel was able to adjust the menu according to satisfy both of our dietary requirements. We started with a classic starter of salted edamame beans and vegetable gyoza.
For a main, I moved onto an agedashi tofu, which is a kind of tentyusu broth with large pieces of crispy tofu and vegetable ura maki (with no mayo). My sister had the beef teppaniyaki, a grilled dice of sirloin with mixed spices with steamed rice.
The flavours were delicate, yet powerful; you knew the dishes were made by someone who was skilled enough to care. The 'soup' especially had that fantastic quality of being never-ending - something I very much enjoy in my food.
The vegetable ura maki was fresh and perfectly formed, converting even the hard-core carnivore of my sister to the ways of sticky rice and avocado.
Daniel has been quoted saying "you need to have good knife skill to make good sushi, it is quite simple, but skilled", a philosophy that can be tasted in every mouthful.
